Sedation Dentistry

Our office is proud of it's efforts to promote dental care to everyone who needs it. Some patients require special "help" to be able to cope with their dental treatment needs. Oral sedation in the dental office is referred to as "miniman sedation" by dental professionals.

MINIMAL SEDATION -By using medications that have proven their effectiveness and safety, you will retain your ability to independently and continuously maintain your airway and respond normally to stimulation and verbal commands. You remain conscious and are able to cooperate with your dental staff, but your coordination may be impaired somewhat. You will most probably not remember your dental visit.

MEDICATIONS - Dr. Aronson has used several types of oral medications and tends to customize your sedation medication depending on your health, special needs, length of appointment and what needs to happen during the visit. Valium "family" medications are the most common. Some medications that block the gag reflex are also chosen if they might possibly be of benefit.

SAFETY - Your safety is our primary concern. A complete medical history will be taken and your current medications will be evaluated for conflicts. A risk assessment will also include a consultation with your MD if you present with certain medical conditions. These conditions might include uncontrolled hypertension, angina, recent heart attacks or medication changes. After your medical baseline of blood pressure, pulse rate and Blood Oxygen level is verified, your unique sedation visit and the medicines used for sedation will be discussed.

TYPICAL VISIT WITH ORAL SEDATION - Although each visit is taylored to the patient's needs, a typical visit goes like this. The night before a pill will be supplied to help your sleep. The visit will be early morning and one hour prior to the visit you will take a single pill. You will need to have someone bring you and pick you up and also stay with you for the day of the visit. We will see you in our office and you will be comfortable and able to wal, possibly with some limited assistance. Sedate and relaxed but able to communicate and cooperate. We will spend about one hour preparing you with additional oral meds, all while being monitored. After you reach a level of comfort and relaxation adequate for dental care, we will begin the proceedure. You will be concious, cooperative but relaxed and comfortable during the entire visit. You will not remember the visit after the medications wear off.

FOLLOW-UP - Dr Aronson always calls during the day after the patient is released. He will make sure you remain comfortable and you have assistance during the first several hours after the visit. The office will call the next day to make sure that you are doing well.

Oral sedation in the dental office is great for patients who have avoided dentistry due to anxiety, special needs that have not been addressed by other offices or a reluctance to have multiple appointments due work demands. If you would like more information about oral sedation please call our office.

CERTIFICATION - Dr. Aronson is certified by the State of California Dental Board. The permit is for Oral Conscious Sedation for Adults. His training includes approximately 80 hours of post graduate study every two years.
